Sanary is also a real Provence fishing village with a small fleet of active fishermen. Sanary is also the headquarters of an important association for the safeguarding and promotion of small scale artisan fishing, L'Encre de Mer.
We encourage you to reduce your consumption of industrial fish, and to buy local fish, if possible direct from the fisherman else from your fishmonger. You might discover some of the less known species, which can be as good as the more expensive breams and soles. For example, freshly caught mackerel is absolutely delicious and costs around 4 Euro per kilo in Sanary. While others may go for expensive red tuna fish steaks, look out for "pélamide", a small tuna-like fish with white meat which costs under 12 Euro per kilo and is better than tuna or bonito.
